About
Our History
Troop 262 was founded in 1985 by Malcolm Nordstrom, then Mayor of Double Oak, Texas, Phil Jacobsen, Roger Denison, and Dale Fowler. At that time, Phil, Dale and Roger’s wives were teachers at Flower Mound Elementary and they were instrumental in gaining the support of the school’s principal, Connie Gall, who allowed the Troop to meet in that facility. The first Committee Chairman was Tom Podlucky. Many extraordinary people were involved in those early years including Judy and Otto Sedronsky, Paul Peters, Ron Tipton, Mike Conway and others. Troop 262 grew rapidly in the 1990s due to a strong focus on “Fun first, advancement second.” Keeping the older boys involved was the key to the growth.
Fun First!
We believe in keeping senior high boys active in the troop and since 1995, Troop 262 has consistently fielded a high adventure trek to camps such as Philmont in New Mexico, Northern Tier in the Boundary Waters, Sea Base in Florida, or Bechtel Summit Reserve in West Virginia. Providing high adventure options to keep older boys engaged in Scouting is a standard part of Troop 262’s Trail to Eagle program. Between 1994-1996, Troop 262 had members of the front lines of both Marcus’ and Lewisville’s football teams involved in scouting. Backpacking at Philmont was easy with them!
Soaring to Eagle Rank
Troop 262’s history does not show any boys achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at age 13 or 14 and only two boys from the troop have achieved that rank before their 16th birthday. The extraordinary 110 Scouts to date that have earned Eagle Rank truly earned it by honestly developing their character and leadership skills as outlined in the requirements set forth by BSA within a successfully structured program. “Fun first” is what motivated them to develop those skills and gave them a desire to achieve this impressive goal. “Fun first” still drives the current adult leadership as well, which keeps the Troop’s program vibrant and strong.
Ready to Roll
The Troop’s camping equipment was originally stored in an old shed that was part of Double Oak’s Town Hall. Monthly camping trips began and ended there with hours of loading and unloading a single flatbed trailer. Trying to decide what to take and what not to take, and finding out two hours later while setting up camp that we had decided wrong, resulted in a large number of extra trips back and forth. Two covered trailers were purchased as a result of that problem and due to the fact that our storage space was eliminated when the new Double Oak Town Hall was constructed. When the time came to move the equipment into the new trailers, many duplicate items were donated to a Dallas-area Cub Scout Pack – providing enough gear for a full den of second year Webelos to camp! The gear needs of the troop continued to grow and is now stored at the home of a troop benefactor in a fleet of four trailers each outfitted appropriately for specific activities.
